Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,
Welcome! We hope everyone had a wonderful summer. We are happy to be back and we are ready for a fantastic year. We are looking forward to working with you and your child to assist in their journey for a successful school year.
Our parent-teacher relationship is vital to your child's success in school. By working together, we can help your child have a very fulfilling learning experience. We are available through phone calls, notes, and our favorite - e-mail. We check our e-mail daily. You can usually expect a response from us that day or the next morning. All of our contact information is on the reverse of this page and is also online.
We believe all students are capable of learning. All students need to be encouraged, supported, and assisted to reach their full potential. We expect all students to be respectful, responsible, and to listen and follow directions. To create a safe environment where learning can take place, we cannot and will not accept any behavior that is not conducive of learning.
Our classroom expectations are:
- Respect
- Be Prepared, Be Prompt, Be Polite
- Be Responsible and Accountable
- Listen and Participate
- Wait to be Dismissed by Your Teacher
Your child’s grades are available online through PowerSchool. A letter was provided to you with your individual username and password. If you do not have this information you may request it by calling our school office. Homework, quizzes, test and projects will be graded using points. Homework is a means of assessment; it may be graded and recorded.
We are looking forward to teaching our curriculum this year. We have a newly written language arts program this year! We know you and your child will enjoy the language arts this year. The students will greatly benefit from the new skills they will master and the relevant connections they will make through reading and applying these to their daily lives.
Our social studies in sixth grade covers world history. We are excited about taking the students on a journey across time to discover the history of the early ages of the world. The students will have many resources available to them to uncover the past civilizations of the world. Virtually we will travel back in time and all over the world. The students will discover early civilizations, the ancient world, new empires, religions, the middle ages, and about our current ever-changing world.
Our Science is an integrated course created to help engage and inspire our students to pursue STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Mathematics) careers and develop the skills they need to succeed in the 21st century. We support inquiry-based learning with a hands-on, minds-on concept. Our students will explore Earth Science, Life Science and Physical Science throughout the year. Sixth grade students will also participate in our annual Science Fair in the spring. We are looking forward to a wonderful year.
In math this year our students will apply previously learned concepts to complete conceptual and real life problems. Students will solve word problems, decimals, graphs, charts, ratios, fractions and many other mathematical skills. Students will receive work to reinforce these skills and use Study Island to focus on specific concepts. The math teachers are available to assist your child. Included you will find log in information for online access to the textbook and resource practice pages.
In Language Arts and Literature, our ultimate goal is to improve our communication skills through Reading, Writing, Vocabulary and Grammar exercises. Most often, these skills will be taught through hands-on activities, individual projects and group assignments. In addition, we will read a wide variety of literature throughout the year. Not only will they study different types of literature from their textbook, but through popular novels as well.
Once again, we would like to welcome everyone back from summer vacation. The 2016-2017 school year is going to be a great experience for your child in sixth grade. We would like to thank you in advance for your continued support and commitment throughout this school year.
Educationally yours,
Sixth Grade Team Teachers
